Press Release No. 513, Issued on 2 Nov. 2006

Korea Federation of Housewives' Clubs

The KFHC will hold a Grand Forum on the Reduced Use of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and a Campaign to Promote Environmentally-Friendly Consumption

The "Grand Forum on the Reduced Use of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and a Campaign to Promote Environmentally-Friendly Consumption," jointly hosted by the Korea Federation of Housewives' Clubs (Chairperson Kim Cheon-ju) and the National Federation of Housewives' Schools (Chairperson Lee Yun-ja) and sponsored by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) and the National Institute of Toxicological Research (NITR), will be held in the international conference room of Seoul Women's Plaza in Daebang-dong, Seoul on November 7.  (See the attached time schedule)

Most consumers are unfamiliar with the term Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC) because they are commonly known as "environmental hormones".
The terminology and the phenomenon came as a shock to the majority of consumers when they first emerged as a hot issue. However, there have been few specific discussions on how they affect our everyday life and how we can reduce the generation of, and damage caused by, these toxic materials in our daily routine.

Based on the consensus that consumers can no longer afford to sit on their hands with regard to the ongoing proliferation of toxic materials - including EDCs - as modern materialistic civilization advances, industry experts, representatives from relevant organizations and consumers will gather together to discuss ways and policies to reduce the generation of EDCs in our everyday life. Furthermore, participating consumers will declare their commitment to changing their consumption habits in ways that can make their daily routine more environmentally-friendly, even though such changes may cause certain inconveniences.
The discussion and declaration will certainly provide useful guidelines regarding the actions and habits we as consumers should adopt. We hope that the event will be widely publicized and attended by many experts and consumers.
